Peace in Christ, How long is too long to wait? Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob all demonstrate one theme in their relationship with God and that was that true faith is about waiting. When Abraham was 75 years old he was promised an inheritance, for him and his children. Even though Abraham had no children at the time, and his wife Sarah was 65 years old, Abraham believed the promise (Gen 12:4). After about 12 years or so, while waiting Sarah came up with an idea, since she could not have children she could be a surrogate mother through her servant Hagar. Ishmael was born to Abraham and Hagar (Gen 16:16) when Abraham was 86 years old. Then when Abraham was 99 years old the LORD again spoke with Abraham and promised him that he would bless him with a son through Sarah. Sarah gave birth to Isaac when Abraham was 100 years old and Sarah being 90 years old (Gen 21:5); 25 years Abraham waited for the blessing of Isaac. After Sarah’s death Isaac also experienced the length of faith. Isaac married Rebekah when he was 40 years of age but she could not have children and so Isaac prayed that his wife would be able to bear children. When Isaac was 60 years old Rebekah gave birth to twins: Esau & Jacob (Gen. 25:20, 26); twenty years praying and waiting, how sweet a reward after such a lengthy wait.
